Choosing The Best Pre-Natal Nutrition

 

The things that a woman eats and drinks while pregnant will be used as the building blocks for her baby’s body. This is why it is essential to try and to eat well. Unfortunately, between morning sickness, cravings and food aversions, sometimes it can feel impossible to eat all the right foods. Fortunately, filling in any nutritional gaps is easier than a mother may think to help keep mom and baby healthy.

 

There are a number of different vitamins and supplements on the market, but many mothers are not comfortable with the thought of synthetic nutrition. That’s why the best place to start for advice is the doctor’s office. A doctor is the best resource for questions ranging from everything as simple as what you should and shouldn’t be eating, to questions that may require a more involved explanation like the process and benefits of umbilical cord blood banking. Here are a few things to keep in mind when making food selections selections.

Go organic if you are able to. Organic foods are grown without pesticides and other toxins so avoiding non-organic food or making as many organic food choices as you are able to are the best suggestions. If you have to choose what to products to buy organic over others, choose to buy more organic animal products (dairy, poultry, eggs, and meat).

 

Choosing more organic animals products will help a mom take in healthier proteins, which are paramount in growing a healthy baby. Women should increase their protein intake throughout all trimesters of her pregnancy, as protein is very helpful in building up baby’s body. Organic red meat is a great source of iron, an important nutrient needed to keep mom and baby’s blood rich with red blood cells—too few red blood cells leads to anemia and feeling weak.

 

Omega-3 fatty acids are another very important addition to a mother’s diet. Studies have shown that the fatty acids are essential for healthy brain development and also helps the mother absorb the other vitamins and nutrients. Typically these are found in abundance in most fish, but due to concerns about mercury, most pregnant women will limit the amount of fish she eats. This is why a fish oil supplement is usually a good idea.

Lastly, a big one to avoid is trans fat. Trans fats can be found in many processed foods and things like crackers and cereals. Read labels and look for the word “hydrogenated” to help you point out what foods are high in trans fat. There has been a correlation found between mothers who eat a lot of trans fat and fetal loss.

 

By taking in essential vitamins and minerals, you’ll be providing your developing baby with healthy building blocks to thrive.
